Highly Integrated TFT-LCD DC-DC Converter Saves Space

Staff  |   ED Online ID #16489  |   August 22, 2007

The highly integrated MAX8795A TFT-LCD dc-dc converter from Maxim Integrated Products saves both space and cost. The device incorporates a high-performance step-up regulator, two linear-regulator controllers, five high-current operational amplifiers, and a logic-controlled, high-voltage switch with adjustable delay, all in a 5- by 5- by 0.8-mm, 32-pin thin quad flat no-lead (TQFN) package. Designed to drive the LCD backplane (Vcom) and/or gamma-correction divider string, the op amps feature ±130-mA output current, a 45-V/µs slew rate, a 20-MHz bandwidth, and rail-to-rail operation on the input and output.

To further reduce solution size, the MAX8795A uses a 1.2-MHz current-mode regulator with an integrated 20-V n-channel MOSFET. The converter provides a regulated supply voltage for panel source drivers, and it delivers fast transient response to pulsed loads while achieving efficiencies over 85%. Its high frequency enables the use of ultra-small inductors and ceramic capacitors. The integrated gate-on and gate-off linear-regulator controllers provide regulated, TFT gate-on and gate-off supplies using external charge pumps attached to the switching node. These power supplies employ a high-voltage-switch control matrix to improve system operation and efficiency while powering the LCD-panel row drivers. The device is specified from –40°C to 85°C. An evaluation kit that includes recommended external components is available to reduce design time.
