Webinar: Advanced Jitter Concepts And Correlation Wednesday, January 16 at 2 pm ET/11 am PT Presented by LeCroy
The material covered in this seminar will give insight into advanced methods of measuring jitter, reducing the amount of jitter added to the signal by the measurement process and correlating measurements made using different algorithms. Advanced topics will include virtual probing and the Q-Scale methodology for jitter estimation (including Tj breakdown into Rj and Dj).
What's Happening In Short-Range Wireless? By Louis E. Frenzel, Communications/Test Editor
There are literally dozens of methods used in transmitting data wirelessly over short distances. Most of these technologies are official standards, and each has carved out a niche in the wireless world. Here is a look at what is happening with some of the more commonly used standards like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, UWB, and ZigBee.
Technology Editor Bill Wong takes a look at the power of 1080p HDTV, Blu-ray, and HDMI technology while experimenting with the some products on the market to optimize picture resolution. He also provides product reviews for the Sharp, Samsung, and Logitech products he selected for his tests.
SiRFInstantFixII, an autonomous version of SiRF Technology's SiRFInstantFix technology, promises to significantly improve the startup times of portable navigation devices (PNDs) and other mobile devices without network connectivity for assistance or updates.
Even in resistors, new specialty technologies allow manufacturers to distinguish themselves. New designs and packages include heat transfer surfaces and thin film-resistive inks in non-inductive patterns.
A major Korean telecommunication service provider will use Ikanos Communications' Fusiv Vx155 processor in its first trial deployment of residential gateways. The Fusiv Vx155 powers Mercury's PHY-agnostic residential gateway, which is designed for use with VDSL2-, PON-, and AON-based access networks for distributing triple-play services in the home.
2008 INTERNATIONAL CES - Intel unveiled 16 new chips, including its first 45-nm processors for Centrino-based laptops. All of the chips feature Intel's high-k plus metal-gate (hk+mg) transistor formula and its 45-nm manufacturing process.
2008 INTERNATIONAL CES - Microsoft Corp. might not be the unbeatable giant it once seemed to be, but Chairman Bill Gates made the case Sunday night that its technologies are becoming even more flexible and powerful as they seep into automobiles, Internet-based TV networks, and living rooms.
2008 INTERNATIONAL CES - AMD revealed the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3000 series, a new family of graphics processors for high-definition gaming and video in notebook PCs.

In our January 31 cover story, Contributing Editor Ron Schneiderman will look at the role of power efficiency in today's designs. How important is power efficiency in your current projects?
Reduced power consumption is our number-one goal.
Power efficiency is one of our key goals.
We trim power where we can, but not at the expense of other specifications.
Power efficiency isn't a concern at all.

The sixth edition of Keithley's "Low Level Measurements Handbook" covers the fundamentals of precision dc current, voltage, and resistance measurements with a section devoted to common low-level measurement applications. Also included is an instrument selection guide as well as a measurement troubleshooting guide, a glossary of terms, and important safety considerations.
Low Power Methodology Manual: For System-On-Chip Design By Michael Keating, David Flynn, Rob Aitken, Alan Gibbons, and Kaijian Shi
This book is thoroughly recommended to anyone embarking on a low-power SoC project. While it may be most useful to those hewing to an ARM-based project with a Synopsys-based flow, there's more than enough material of a generic nature to make it worthwhile for SoC designers of any stripe.
