NXP Device Integrates DVR, Time-Shifting Into TVs

European television manufacturer Loewe has chosen the SAA7164 system-on-a-chip (SoC) from NXP Semiconductors to provide digital video recorder (DVR) and time-shifting functions in Loewe’s new hybrid LCD TVs. The SAA7164 forms the core SoC of a highly integrated encoder module that enables consumers to pause or record analog sources in addition to digital programs onto a hard disk drive, without the need for an external set-top box.

The SAA7164 uses advanced 3D comb filtering and noise reduction to optimize the video quality of all recorded material. The device integrates up to eight standalone chips: two IF demodulators, two PAL/NTSC/SECAM decoders, two stereo decoders, and two multi-format compression engines.

“As HD LCD TVs offer increased functionality, it’s ideal for Loewe to add features such as digital recording and time-shifted playback that ensure the same picture quality level from recorded as well as live content on our new hybrid LCD TV models,” said Uwe Bach, head of TV development at Loewe. “The SAA7164 solution from NXP will allow our customers to record and watch all types of analog sources such as movies or their favorite TV shows at any time, pause live TV or skip within time-shift recorded content without the need for an additional STB.”
