Voice activation can provide hands-free operation of embedded devices. Sensory's Voice Extreme Toolkit makes programming the company's RSC-364 speech chip in C a snap. Speaker-independent and speaker-dependent voice recognition with speech prompting, speech verification, and audio record and playback are supported.

The RSC-364 incorporates microphone input and preamp plus DSP, amplifier, and speaker output. Available for $2.40 ($3.85 in large quantities), it supports Sensory Speech 5.0 Technology. The Voice Extreme Toolkit, which includes development hardware with an RSC-364 chip, sells for $129.

Real-Time UML Developers Gain Testing Tool
Testing real-time Unified Modeling Language (UML) designs is not an easy task. The latest version of Rational Software's real-time UML development environment, Rational Rose RealTime, has a new test tool option, Rational Test RealTime. Features include object testing of new components, UML sequence diagram tracing, and hard real-time system testing support with millisecond-timing resolution. It also handles Rational ClearCase and ClearCase LT, Rational's change management tool.

The latest version of Rational Test RealTime now incorporates Rational Quality Architect for RealTime and new support for Sun's Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) platform and Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP). Both features are included in the price of Rational RoseReal Time. Rational Test RealTime will cost $5495 per node-locked license and $9625 per floating license.

Windows Plug-Ins Run On Linux Browser
Linux developers who need Windows-based browser plug-ins, such as those for Quicktime and Shockwave Director, can turn to Codeweavers' x86-based CrossOver Plug-in. The CrossOver Plug-in is based on WINE technology, a Windows API that runs on Linux. CrossOver uses X Windows.

Requirements:

• Browser: Netscape, Mozilla, or Konqueror
• X Windows X11R6 3.3 or higher
• 4M storage (90k for display only)
• 2M RAM (20k for display only)
• Plug-in server must be an x86 system

Fibre Channel Drives High-Availability Linux
High-availability, embedded Linux clustering distributes network services such as Web, SMTP, FTP, Radius, voice-over-IP, and DNS across multiple processors. The Availix Horizontal Clustering (HC) 1.3 from Lineo supports redundant Fibre Channel links between processors and mass storage, thereby providing high-speed, nonstop server operation. Features include:

• Content sharing on a storage area network (SAN) through Global File System (GFS 4.0.1)
• SNMP MIBs for administration and maintenance

TCP/IP Stack Offloads Host For Gigabit Speeds
Gigabit Ethernet pushes most processors to the limit, so offloading network processing to an intelligent network interface card (iNIC) can increase performance and reduce processor overhead. Wind River's Tornado for Intelligent Network Acceleration (TINA) architecture and software streamlines iNIC and processor integration. TINA initially supports Intel's XScale microarchitecture and Wind River's VxWorks 5.4 RTOS. Wind River's reference board is based on Intel's 80200 processor.

TINA splits the TCP/IP stack across the host processor and the XScale processor. It supports hardware-assisted checksum generation and hardware-assisted segmentation. The stack supports Jumbo frames. Because TINA handles the OpenNIC API, developers can write customized applications, such as virtual private networks and firewalls. Linux host drivers are included as well. TINA can support iSCSI, sending SCSI commands over TCP/IP. The application development kit is available now.
