Program Quickly Calculates Transformer Design Parameters

During the transformer design process, design engineers need to quickly verify that their designs satisfy the various interrelated transformer design requirements. These would include the size of the core, the required turns ratio in the primary and secondary for a specified factor, the operating frequency, and the input and output voltages. This design idea presents a handy C program that provides quick calculations for almost any type of transformer design parameters on-the-fly.

The input parameters to the programs are:

  • Primary input voltage
  • Secondary output voltage
  • Operating frequency
  • Required output power
  • Efficiency

The design parameters computed by the program are:

  • Required core cross-section
  • Primary turns
  • Secondary turns
  • Primary current
  • Secondary current

This program has been tested using a Turbo C++ DOS-based compiler, and it works well.

    This program allows you to use almost any voltage within the breakdown potential of the wire insulation. You can use any input voltage and any output voltage and any frequency and any power rating. This design is very flexible. Only at very high frequencies where core is not linear you will find problems. Hence core response need to be linear and that is only a selection of the core material.

    Friends,

    This program in "C" was written to help you calculate the transfomer core size, turns in coils and current rating for each coil. These are essential parameters to reach to your start up goal to make a transformer. However, many of you may now look for high frequency cores in switching power designs, and hence, you may have to take care of pulse power rather than continuous sine wave. Hence, compute the core size for the pulse and not for repeat rate of the pulses. Core size may increase if you extract too much energy in small pulse and keep dead time more than 50% duty cycle.

    i am in need of manufacturing transformer with 2 primary and 1 secondary side . the leq of circuit is 200.7uH and M = 25.7 uH and primary has 20 and 100 turns in series and they are parallel to the secondary turn of 20 turns. the leq of primary is 9.4 uH and that of secondary is 140 uH so plz calculate the swg of wire needed and area of core used.

    i am fourth yr electrical engineering student in ethiopia .my instructor gave mean assignment on high power transformer design .he told us calculaion is only possible by numercal analysis.but i want to show him this program b/c it is very sophiticated and not time killing one.so how can i get this soft ware.if u ask me payment it is impossible for me since iam the poor student

    Im kumar.s.ch.v. of 3rd B.tech(EEE) from VIIT,Andhra Pradesh(Visakhapatnam). Im also planning for the software program to design a transformer and design of a 400KV transmission line.
